I know the title of this blog post is a bit out there, even a little on the bold side. A cynic might even raise a skeptical eyebrow at the thought of the head of marketing for Hatch having a few kind words to say about Hatch. Let’s be reasonable here. I said it “might be the greatest product ever created in the history of mankind”, not “is the greatest” – big difference. So I think we can move on.
The marketing world is no stranger to hype and wildly exaggerated claims. In 1989, the Nintendo Power Glove boldly arrived promising we would be “in the action” and “blown into another dimension”. And most outrageously we were told the Star Wars prequels would be entertaining. All highly questionable claims that weren’t just exaggerations. They were alternative facts.
So for a marketer it’s a true gift when a product offers real value for anyone who loves games. I can’t (yet) promise Hatch will blow you into another dimension (we’re working on it), but it does offer you some pretty cool things you haven’t seen before. You get that Netflix or Spotify type of experience you know and love, with an instant game collection ready to play at any time. The best mobile games on demand with no downloads or in-app purchases. The first of its kind.
Plus, cloud gaming brings new possibilities to change the way we play and share together. For starters, you can instantly share your greatest and funniest gameplay moments to your Hatch Live Feed or social media – just like posting a pic on Instagram. Rewind your game and choose a video clip – then add your own flavor with text, emojis and random drawings. Celebrate glorious achievements or let your friends laugh at your spectacular failures. Nothing brings people together quite like an epic fail. It’s a universal pleasure that breaks through cultural barriers.
And then there’s Shared Single Player – something totally unique to Hatch that has literally (not literally) blown people’s minds. Shared Single Player allows you to invite your Hatch friends into your game session at any time. They can watch you play, with audio chat coming later to let you banter back and forth. But here’s the best part. You can pass on the game controls to anyone in any location – so no more cursing to the heavens when you get stuck on a level. Simply share your controls for any game like Badland or Leo’s Fortune and let a friend help you out of a tight spot. If you invite them to your game and they don’t accept then it’s probably time to rethink your friendship. I’m just saying it’s worth considering.
In live demos we’ve had great reactions as people start imagining what’s possible with this new technology, even how it could impact the way mobile games are developed. It’s exciting and humbling to see people respond this way.
Shared Single Player also offers something bigger than just the game itself. With Hatch you can play and chat from anywhere you happen to be, so if you have kids and you’re traveling it can offer a fun way to keep in touch. It starts out with you playing a game together and then as they tell you about their day at school it becomes something else entirely. A moment that’s real and meaningful – taking place in a virtual space where kids already enjoy spending their time. Add video chat support down the line and the possibilities become even more intriguing.
Now that’s pretty cool, and hopefully you’ll feel the same way when you try Hatch out for yourself. And to think, you don’t even need a Power Glove to make it all happen. Although it would be awesome to wear one anyway.
