Maintaining the team spirit – Challenge accepted!

“Tonight made me feel like we’re one, big family, not just colleagues who work together.” This was a comment one of our teammates made after our summer party, and it’s probably the best testimony you can get when thinking about building the team spirit and office culture.

Keeping up the team spirit is crucial and requires constant maintaining. You can’t just build the culture in one day and then abandon it the next day, trusting it to take care of itself. The way we see it is that trust, fun and encouragement are the fundamental basics for creating dedicated employees. Every single one of us works hard, pours their whole soul into what they do and contributes in priceless ways to the project on-hand.

One of our priorities is to ensure that each individual feels safe and appreciated, to give them the confidence to exceed expectations and try out something they’ve never done before. Even when making a mistake, it’s still more valuable that you gave it a shot and learned from it than not trying at all. We aim to get everyone to the state-of-mind of not being afraid to get their hands dirty and step out from their usual comfort zone. Because in the end, we succeed or fail as a team.

On the other hand, we certainly know how to relax and enjoy each other’s company – whether a board game session in the middle of a day, weekly breakfasts which we have on Fridays, a movie night after work or occasional theme parties we arrange. There wouldn’t be Hatch without the team, so the better we know each other, the better we work together and the more pleasant it makes the daily work.

To be fair, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns every second of this journey we’re on. Hatch is something you’ve never seen in the market before. One of our issues has got a lot to do with finding spectacular talents who are willing to take a leap into the unknown. We don’t want to recruit someone if we have any doubts about how well this person is going to adapt to our culture or thrive in the position we are looking for. We want to build a global, well-functioning superstar team who can rely on each other no matter what.

Even though we spun out of Rovio, which has an established position as an employer, we are still a startup. There’s no denying the certain risks that come along with joining a fairly fresh company that is still in its early developing and learning phase. But that is also one of the great things about it: you get to build your product, brand and culture from scratch, and help a new company bloom.

We believe that there are talents who believe in what we do, just as much as we believe in ourselves. If this blog post inspires even one talent to apply, it’s a win. Quality over quantity any day!
